The chance that breast cancer will lead to death for a woman is about 3%. It is encouraging that death rates from breast cancer have been in decline since about 1990, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are attributed to earlier detection through screening and increased awareness as wells as improved treatment.Meghan Nachbar-Fischer was one of the 3% that lost her young life to breast cancer.
Meghan was more than a statistic though. She was a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She had a deep and infectious faith and was a true inspiration to all who came in contact with her. She always had a smile.
Meghan was living the dream. She was married to Darren Fischer and they had one baby girl, Olivia born on December 29, 2001. Everything was wonderful and life was full! When Olivia was 1 year old, Meghan became pregnant with her second child. Another baby girl was on the way, Madison. The two girls were born almost 2 years apart both in the month of December. During her pregnancy with Madison, Meghan had noticed a lump on her breast. She pointed it out to her OBGYN and the OB stated that is was common for a woman to have lumpy breasts after nursing a child for almost a year and then becoming pregnant with another child. No attention was paid to the lump.
December 17, 2003 was a happy day. Madison was coming into this world! Meghan had an uneventful and beautiful delivery. Mommy and baby were doing fine. As Meghan's milk started to come in, that lump in her breast was causing her pain. After complaining for a couple of days and showing all the nurses, the doctor decided to do a sonogram on that lump. It was determined that the lymph nodes under her arm were also enlarged and a biopsy was ordered. This was on Friday, December 19, 2003 just 2 days after the birth of her second daughter.
The dreadful news came early the next week, just days before Christmas at home with her almost 2 year old daughter and brand new baby girl. Meghan had breast cancer. This was not something a 30 year old mother of 2 can stand to hear. But the fight began! And boy, did she fight. We all fought! It was Meghan's Pride coming together to beat this thing. Mastectomies, chemo, radiation, hysterectomy, doctor visits, Mayo Clinic, KU Med Center are all just a few reminders of that battle.
Sadly, Meghan lost this fight. We all lost. On July 22, 2005, Meghan was called to her everlasting home with God. We love her and miss her more than words can describe but God always finds a way to show us a sign that Meghan is still with us. Our only wish is to help support a way to prevent and possibly cure this disease. Will you help us with our fight?
